You might be thinking:

  • I don’t want to fight.
  • I don’t want to be embarrassed or backed into a corner.
  • I’m tired of being told I’m brainwashed by ‘the liberal media’ when they’re repeating some Fox segment from last night.

So, this episode is a toolkit. A survival guide. I want you to walk into those rooms with confidence, calm, and assurance. Here’s something important: The more printed articles you have on hand, the stronger your position is. MAGA relatives rarely show up with printouts or primary sources. They show up with aggressive vibes, talking points, and a kind of confidence that isn’t rooted in evidence. If you can say, “Actually, I’ve got the article right here,” you change the power dynamic instantly.

Today I’ll give you:

  1. A short list of real Democratic wins and changes happening right now, with sources.
  2. The key contradictions and abuses inside Trump’s second term are hard to defend.
  3. A Public Citizen-based argument tool about illegal orders and constitutional duty.
  4. A printable resource list to take to your next family gathering.

And I’m going to say this clearly before we start:

  • You are not obligated to debate anyone.
  • Your job is not to convert your uncle at the dinner table.
  • Your job is to keep your sanity, protect truth, and if possible, plant seeds of doubt where propaganda has taken root.

Part I — Hope, Momentum, and Democratic Wins You Can Point To

Let’s start somewhere important: things are changing.

MAGA wants you to feel like Democrats never win, never deliver, and never move voters. But the facts say otherwise.

  1. Miami just elected its first Democratic mayor in nearly 30 years

Miami — yes, that Miami, where Republicans have dominated City Hall for decades — elected Eileen Higgins, a Democrat, as mayor in a runoff on December 9, 2025. She won by nearly 20 points over Trump-backed Emilio González, and she’s also Miami’s first woman mayor.

Why this matters for your MAGA relatives:

  • Miami is majority Hispanic with long-standing Cuban American Republican power networks.
  • Trump personally tried to make this race a referendum on himself.
  • The result shows that even in places where Trump brags about building a political empire, voters are pushing back — especially when local Democrats organize and focus on affordability and ethical government.

How to say it at the table:

“If Trump’s movement is so unstoppable, what is the reason that Miami — one of his favorite bragging grounds — just vote for a Democratic mayor for the first time since the 1990s?”

  1. Illinois passed new limits on immigration enforcement

On December 9, 2025, Illinois Governor JB Pritzker signed a law that restricts immigration arrests round state courthouses, expands protections for residents, and makes it easier to sue immigration agents for rights violations.

This is a direct response to Trump’s aggressive immigration raids and courthouse-targeted arrests, which are widely seen as intimidation tactics.

What is the reason these matters:

  • It’s state-level resistance that actually changes people’s daily safety.
  • It shows Democrats doing what MAGA constantly claims they won’t: protecting law-abiding families from chaotic federal overreach.
  • Other states (California, New York) have similar laws — this is a growing pushback model.

How to say it:

“I’m not asking you to agree with every immigration policy — I’m asking you to agree that people shouldn’t get kidnapped at courthouses. Illinois just made that principle law.”

Miami’s race was fueled by bilingual volunteer recruitment, grassroots turnout, and a focus on everyday issues. That model is repeating across multiple states where Democrats are over-performing this year.

Translation: Democrats aren’t dead. They’re rebuilding — and winning.

Part II — Trump’s “Anti-Drug” Rhetoric vs. His Real Actions

One way to handle MAGA talk is to point to contradictions that are so stark they’re hard to spin.

Trump’s second term is full of them.

Here’s one of the clearest:

  • Trump escalates drug war talk — then pardons major drug traffickers
  • Trump uses the language of toughness — poisoning our country, death penalty for dealers, narco-terrorists, etc.
  • And then he uses pardons to free or reduce punishment for people convicted of major drug trafficking. This includes figures like Ross Ulbricht (Silk Road founder), and Juan Orlando Hernández, former Honduran president convicted of trafficking.

Why it matters:

  • This isn’t compassionate clemency. Its power used for political reward and personal branding.
  • It undermines rule-of-law messaging.
  • It shows MAGA morality is often tribal: crimes don’t matter if the person is useful to Trump.

How to say it:

“I’m confused. Trump says drug traffickers are terrorists — but then he pardons high-profile traffickers. So, is he serious about drugs… or serious about loyalty?”

Let’s go to The Washington Post, Trump pardons major drug traffickers despite his anti-drug rhetoric, by Meryl Kornfield and Emily Davies, 12-7-25. “The president has granted clemency to about 100 people accused of drug-related crimes during his time in office, a Post analysis shows.” The lack of Trump’s consistency in message shows how he has no consistent message and he is looking from where he can get a benefit by giving a pardon so the person will support him.

Another example: The Washington Post, The case of a felon who paid a lobbyist nearly $1 million to seek a Trump pardon by Michael Kranish ad Aaron Schaffer, 11-13-15. “Nursing home magnate Joseph Schwartz was sentenced in April to three years for defrauding the government of $38 million. Seven months later, Trump pardoned him, but the White House denies a lobbying tie.”

Here is another: The Washington Post, “Making sense of the Henry Cuellar (Cua ya) pardon,” 12-3-25. “The president views clemency in the monarchical tradition. This undermines the rule of law.”

Part III — The Venezuelan “Double-Tap” Strike and the Mechanics of Authoritarian Power

Let’s move to something scarier, because this is the part MAGA relatives often ignore: what Trump is normalizing about state violence.

What happened?

On September 2, 2025, U.S. forces struck a suspected drug boat off Venezuela. The first strike killed most people aboard. Two survivors clung to the wreckage. Then a second strike killed the survivors — what military observers call a double-tap.

The administration’s claim: The boat was headed to the U.S. with deadly drugs, therefore lethal force was justified.

But Admiral Frank Bradley, who oversaw the operation, briefed Congress on December 5 that the boat was actually headed to Suriname to transfer its cargo to another vessel, not directly to the U.S.

Why this matters:

  • The justification is collapsing.
  • The survivors may have been trying to surrender — and were killed anyway.
  • Legal experts say killing shipwrecked survivors is a possible war crime.

The Bigger Pattern – This is authoritarian behavior in practice:

  • Expand executive killing power
  • Use “terrorism” labels to bypass due process
  • Shift stories after the fact
  • Demand loyalty from the system even when illegal

And Republicans? Many walk out of classified briefings satisfied — not because they’ve proved legality, but because they’re choosing allegiance over law.

How to say it:

“If Obama or Biden had ordered a second strike on survivors clinging to wreckage, Fox would call it murder. How is it fine when Trump does it?”

Part IV — Public Citizen’s Core Point: The Constitution Comes First

Now let’s pull in the Public Citizen, president@citizen.org, Sunday, November 30, 2025, 1:51 PM, terrifying gang of ruthless thugs.

The Principle

Members of the U.S. military swear an oath to the Constitution.

They are obligated to refuse illegal orders.

Six members of Congress — each a veteran or national security professional — publicly reminded service members of that duty:

  • Maggie Goodlander

Public Citizen warns that Trump is amplifying threats against them and implying political punishment for telling the truth. That’s the authoritarian move: attack the people who remind institutions to follow law.

How to say it:

“Patriotism means loyalty to the Constitution — not loyalty to one man. That’s not liberal. That’s literally the oath.”

Connect it to the Venezuelan strike: If Hegseth ordered leave no survivors, that’s an illegal order.

Public Citizen’s logic applies directly: You must refuse illegal orders even if they come from the president’s circle.

This is where MAGA relatives often short-circuit: they want law and order for everyone else, but immunity for Trump’s side.

Guideline 2: Ask for sources

This is where you win without raising your voice.

“Where did you read that? Do you have an article?”

They usually don’t. You do.

Guideline 3: Use “soft certainty”

Instead of: “You’re lying.”

This episode is for everyone who is walking into the holidays with family gatherings that you think, “I have knots in my stomach because I care about my relatives. Yet, I know the conversation is going to wander into MAGA land.” What I want to do is talk to you about what you can do.

The Power Of Evidence: Using Printed Sources To Shift the Dynamic

You might be thinking, “I do not want to fight with them. I do not want to be embarrassed, backed into a corner. I am tired of being told I am brainwashed by the liberal media when they are repeating the same Fox News segments from last night.” This episode is a toolkit for you, a survival guide. I want you to walk into those rooms with confidence, with calmness, reassurance. Here is what is most important. The more printed articles you have on hand, the stronger your position, because they will not have any. That is not what they do.

MAGA relatives usually come in, and they show up with rarely anything that is a primary reference. They certainly will not show up with printing materials like you are going to be. They show up with aggressive vibes, talking points, and a confidence that is not rooted in evidence. If you can say, “Actually, I have got an article right now that is on that. Let me show you the difference in what you are talking about and what I have found in the news.”

I want to give you some very clear things. I am going to give you a short list of real democratic wins and changes that are happening right now with resources. You are going to get a reference list. You are going to have the key contradictions and abuses inside Trump’s second term that are very hard for anybody to defend. You are going to have the public citizen, which is an excellent resource.

It is a legal institute that bases its arguments, tools on very clear statements about illegal actions, things that Trump is doing right now that prevent people from having constitutional duties, and being responsible to the Constitution of the United States. I am going to ask you to have printed materials, resources that take with you, so you will not have a problem. I even give you a list of where you can get it from my blog if you want. I am going to read it off to you. I am going to give you the things so you can create your own. You will have it ready.

See, MAGAs want you to feel like Democrats will never win, they will never deliver. Definitely, with all this gerrymandering, we are never going to win. We are never going to move voters. The facts say otherwise.

Miami just elected the first Democratic mayor in nearly 30 years. She is not Hispanic. This was done on December 7, 2025. The president granted clemency to about 100 people accused of drug-related crimes during his time in office.

The lack of consistency in Trump’s message shows how he is not consistent. He is looking for where he can get the most benefit by giving a pardon, so the person will have to be supported to him. Another example of the Washington Post, the case of a felon who paid a lobbyist nearly a million dollars to seek a Trump pardon.

The nursing home magnate Joseph Schwartz was sentenced to three years for defrauding the government of 38 million. Seven months later, Trump pardons him, but the White House denies any lobbying ties. If I do not want to face the truth, then what I do is lie, or I do anything to shift the burden somewhere else. Another example is the Washington Post making sense of Henry Cuellar’s pardon.

The president views clemency in the monarchal tradition. This undermines the rule of law. He thinks he is some kind of king. Therefore, maybe these people will be loyal to him if he gives them pardons. That is not what pardons are about. The next thing, the Venezuelan Double-Tap Strike and the mechanism of authoritarian power.

Authoritarian Behavior & The Venezuelan “Double-Tap” Strike

Let us move to something that is really much scarier, I think. This is the part mega relatives often ignore. What Trump is normalizing about state violence. They are ignoring the fact that Trump is normalizing state violence, moving into states where he has no right. What happens? Let us have a look at December 2, 2025, when US forces struck a suspected drug boat off Venezuela. The first strike killed most people aboard. Two survivors clung to the wreckage. A second strike killed the survivors. What military observers say is what we call a double tap. The administration claims the boat was headed to the United States with deadly drugs.

Therefore, lethal force was justified. Admiral Frank Bradley, who oversaw the operation, briefed Congress on December 5th that the boat was actually headed to Suriname to transfer its cargo to another vessel, not directly to the United States. Why does this matter? The justification is collapsing that Trump is giving. Her Hegseth keeps giving. The survivors may have been trying to surrender. They were killed anyway. Legal experts say that killing shipwrecked survivors is a possible war crime.

The biggest pattern is the authoritarian behavior that is in practice. Expand the executive’s killing power. Let us make sure everybody sees that I have the executive power to kill people. The terrorist labels to bypass due process. If I name them terrorists, then I can bypass the due process. Shift stories after the fact. Demand loyalty from the system even when it is illegal.

Republicans, many walk out of the classified briefing satisfied, not because they prove legality, but because they are choosing allegiance to Trump over the law. How do we say this at something where we are sitting with relatives? “Now, wait a minute. If Obama or Biden had ordered a second strike on the survivors, clinging to wreckage, Fox News would say it was murder. How is this fine when Trump is doing the same thing?”

Constitutional Duty: Refusing Illegal Orders & Public Citizen’s Role

There is the public citizen. It is a legal group here in the United States that has sued Trump many times. It is continuing to do so because of the actions he is taking. Here is what we see in the public citizens on Sunday, November 30th, called Terrifying Gangs of Ruthless Thugs. Members of the US military swear an oath to the Constitution. They are obligated to refuse illegal orders.

Public Citizen, which has all lawyers representing it, is addressing the issues we have with Trump accusing six members of Congress, each a veteran or a national security professional, who publicly reminded service members that they have a duty to support the Constitution, to support the rule of law, not to support illegal military actions. These individuals are Jason Crow, Chris Deluzio, Maggie Goodlander, Chrissy Houlahan, Mark Kelly, and Elissa Slotkin.

Many of these people I know, and I have read about them. I have seen them. I have listened to speeches, whatever. Public Citizen is warning all of us that Trump is amplifying threats against them and implying political punishment. With Kelly, he is going to put him back in calling back to service and then court-martial him.

Authoritarian Drift: Texas Gerrymandering & Minority Rule

He is implying political punishment for telling the truth. The authoritarian move is attacking people who remind institutions to follow the law. How do we say this one? “Patriotism means loyalty to the Constitution. It does not mean loyalty to one man. That is not liberal thought. That is literally the oath that people take as service individuals who serve our country.” We can also connect it to the Venezuela strike. If Hegseth ordered, “Leave no survivors.” That is an illegal order. A public citizen says and applies the following. “You must refuse illegal orders even if they come from the president’s circle.”

This is where MAGAa relatives often short-circuit. They want law and order for everyone, but they want immunity for Trump and his side. Let us look at Texas redistricting. I am taking the gerrymandering that is happening in my state, but it is happening all over the country. I am including a letter from Representative Lizzie Fletcher, whom I have great respect for, another attorney who represents my district in the House of Representatives.

Texas passed a congressional map that Richard Wilson, whom I talked about in the previous podcast. A federal district court heard nine days of evidence. Found overwhelming proof of unconstitutional racial gerrymandering in a 160-page opinion. The lower court ordered Texas to keep the current map for 2026 while the case proceeds. The Supreme Court stepped in anyway. Allowed the new map to be used, basing it on the right to have partisan politics determine a map.

Why does it matter? Gerrymandering lets politicians choose voters instead of voters choosing politicians. Let me repeat it. Gerrymandering lets politicians try to choose voters instead of voters choosing politicians. It is locked in minority rule. It is how Republicans keep House power even when they lose the national vote.

The GOP is rushing to redraw House maps after the Supreme Court wins. The Supreme Court is literally giving green lights for these gerrymandered maps. The GOP is rushing to exploit the window. Democrats are forced into an offensive posture. Democracy is further degraded by gerrymandering. It is interesting, they are fools, because voters. There are many who are very upset about the gerrymandering. There is no support for gerrymandering, unless you are threatened or you get violent attacks, so forth, which is what happened in Indiana, because they did not want to gerrymander their state districts, but they got threatened.

That is Trump’s doing. How do we say it? “If your ideas are so popular, you do not need to rig maps. Gerrymandering is what you do when you know voters would fire you if you had a fair shot.” There is a way to handle MAGA relatives. There are some very practical guidelines. You can call them rules, whatever you want to call them. These guidelines can be very helpful to you. Let us talk about the strategy I have realized over the years.

Facts alone are not enough. If you have those facts, you can present them, and you can easily walk away. They will not have to argue because they do not have the facts. They do not have the resources or the references. One of my guidelines, the first one, is not debate or fire hose. MAGA relatives often toss ten claims in a minute. Your job is to pick one and slow it down. “Let us see. Let us take one at a time. Do you want to talk about the Venezuela strike or do you want to talk about pardons first?” Stick to it. Refuse to do more than one. Guideline two. Ask for resources. This is where you win without raising your voice. “Where did you read that? Do you have an article that shows me what you read?”

They usually do not. You do because you have the references. Guideline three, soft certainty. Instead of “You are lying,” which might be the thing you would like to say, try this. “That is not what the reporting shows in the number of references that I have looked at. Here is what is being said.” Lay down a piece of paper to show them.

Guideline four, no window exit. If it becomes a place where you are being mocked or insulted, or it is circular, just say, “I care about you. Let us talk about something else. I am not going to go around in circles or argue with you.” That is a strength. It is not surrender. Here is a printed resource. It is a counter lie kit that I am providing you. You can bring it to the dinner in a printed stack. Even if it is 3 to 5 pages of highlights, it changes the whole energy. The A part is democratic wins, momentum.

Number one. Miami elects a Democratic mayor. December 9th, 2025, first in 30 years, first woman mayor. Highlight. Trump endorsed the opponent and lost badly by twenty points. Two, Illinois restricts courtroom immigration arrests. December 9th, 2025. Buffer zone legal protection. The next one, B, is Trump’s hypocrisy on drugs and pardons. Trump pardoned drug kingpins while preaching a drug war. NPR/KUOW has summaries, examples. I have given you those references in the blog.

Ross Ulbricht his pardon contradicts what Trump says, “Death penalty for dealers” rhetoric. This is in Newsweek. Juan Orlando Hernandez’s pardon. He is a former enduring president. He was convicted of trafficking. C, Venezuela Double-Tap Strikes, and due process, more briefs to Congress. The boat was not heading to the US. Survivors were killed in a second strike. Communications unclear. Surrendered the disputed. Experts call the second strike a likely war crime. Public citizen, constitutional duty arguments.

Service members must refuse illegal orders. List the six veteran lawmakers, and oath logic. Use the provided text in the references I am giving you because it is very hard to counter things like this. Put it with the Venezuela Strike Story as the real-world test case. E, Texas, and national gerrymandering. The Supreme Court let Texas use the map despite a lower court finding the racial gerrymandering. Why does this lock in minority rule and threaten democratic legitimacy? Alito is the one who did it.

Defending Democracy In Everyday Conversations

He is the one who is questioned over and over again. Here, this is how I would like to close. What you are really defending is, let me say it this way, these conversations are not just about politics. They are about reality. If we have them face reality, what is going on out there, they are going to have a hard time with their various points.

A healthy family can disagree on tax rates or immigration levels, but a democracy cannot survive if one side believes a president can kill without due process. Maps can be rigged because we deserve to win. Pardons are for loyalists. Truth is whatever the loudest cable show says at 9:00 PM. Do not walk in afraid. Walk in grounded with your references. Walk in prepared.

If all you do is quietly place a printed article on the table, say, “Here is what I am looking at,” you have already done something powerful. You have defended reality.
